I’ve been saying since E3 2016 that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is taking quite a few pointers from the Metal Gear Solid franchise with some of its stealth and guerrilla warfare ideas. The Phantom Pain in particular is an obvious inspiration. Sneaking up on enemy enclaves, bombing them to pieces, and slipping away under the veil of chaos and smoke? All in a day’s work for Snake and Big Boss.
In the latest screenshots from Nintendo, we see how Link’s wildlife menu is shaping to mimic that of the super soldiers’ as well. Now, I know that Breath of the Wild is partially shaping itself in the image of popular survival games in that you have to capture and eat animals to survive, but eating frogs, lizards, and snakes rings a little too close to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for my comfort. It’s in both the title and the theme song!
Feeding on a tree frog, Link? I see how it is. But really, this is just another fun connection between the two series now that Breath of the Wild is taking The Legend of Zelda in a bold new direction.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be released for the NX and Wii U in spring 2017.
